Our Quirky Guide to Seattle Various Contributors 9781439286777 Books

With Zagat (now Google) and Yelp out there, what is Amazon to do?

This guide is a decent start, main sections:

1. Eating Out (Bakeries, Outdoor dining, Cheap Eats, Splurge, Late Night, ... )
2. Local Wine and Beer (Breweries, Wine bars, Wineries)
3. Farmer's markets
4. Arts (Classical music, Visual arts, Art Walks, Museums, ...)
5. Theatre
6. Music (Shopping for music, Venues and Fests, Music news)
7. Sports (Seattle Mariners, Seattle Sounders)
8. Outdoors (Skiing, Scuba, Sailing, Running, Biking, Motorcycling)
9. Major attractions
10. Adventures
11. Kids Activities
12. Pets
13. Only in Seattle (Conventions, NW Folklife Fest, Driving in Seattle)
14. Shopping (Queen Anne, University district, Capitol Hill, Online)

Oddly, though, there is no map. In addition, the icons that are used (for the Washington state outline, eco-friendly symbol, and vegetarian-friendly) all look blocky and pixelated. This is a common problem for math formulas in Kindle versions, but there are ways to show these items cleanly on the Kindle. Also, I noticed a few typos, such as "skiiing" and "noise-canceling".

In the middle of the book, there is a long interview with a glass artist that is a good read, but still seems out of place for a book.

Overall, recommended.

This wasn't nearly as helpful and informative as the National Trust Guide, and didn't add much to Lonely Planet's "48 Hours in Seattle". For the short form, I'd use "48 Hours"; long form, the National Trust.
Quirky yes but more for the new resident than traveler. And why list all the online stores? And with all that quirkiness there was NO mention of Archie Mcphees! The superstore of quirky. I am sure the quirkiness of Seatle has muliplied since this booked was published. I enjoyed thumbing threw it but did not get anything "new" from it for my week visit.
I downloaded the free edition for my upcoming visit to Seattle. This book was a quick read, but didn't provide any new insights that I couldn't get from surfing the web or exploring a AAA guide book. One thing I found annoying was that the first Chapter was dedicated to food and restaurants, rather than sites and activities. (Just a hang up of mine - unless it's a food book exclusively, save the restaurant reviews for the last chapter...or at least mid-book.)

Also, I think the book could have done without the section about online shopping, since the sites mentioned were national sites like and not sites dedicated to local Seattle merchandise.
This is one great and different travel advice book! It was really helpful to me as I will be a pedestrian most of my time there. I do not mind walking in the rain but was glad to have reminders about rain gear. Places, restaurants, entertainment venues, etc. It is not a guide for accommodations; instead it focuses on finding the reader's source of personal interests. I do wish they had included public transportation information. Includes a bit of humor about driving in Seattle. Overall, I enjoyed it!
Living on the East Coast, I really don't know the first thing about Seattle. I picked this guide up because my husband and I are attending a wedding in Seattle in June and I thought it would be a great introduction to the city.

Well, I was right. Engaging and friendly, Our Quirky Guide to Seattle was a pleasure to read, and full of interesting destinations which I'll definitely take the time to visit.

I thought the section on food, wine and beer was particularly strong (being an enthusiastic foodie, it was my first port of call in the guide). Offering fun and comprehensive descriptions of both inexpensive and more pricey eateries, it has something for everyone, and I'll certainly be visiting a few!

I agree with the reviewer who said the guide occasionally went off topic; I felt the running section of the guide could have focused more on evaluating the potential of the various running tracks and less on where to buy running shoes. Ditto with the motorcycle tracks; I'd have liked more information on the tracks themselves and less about what I should bring. I rather enjoyed the Seattle Style Outdoors Survival Kit though!

The guide definitely had its weaker points. The section on what to do indoors with your cat was completely out of the blue, and the section on online shopping had nothing to do with Seattle... but that's a fairly minor point in an overall interesting read.

Overall, I enjoyed the tone and variety of the guide, and although I am a stranger to Seattle, I felt that even locals could get something out of it - I hope I have time to check out some of the farmer's markets when I visit!
